About Us
* The shop is currently undergoing a refurbishment, so will be closed until further notice. Please check back here for updates.*
The Brockweir and Hewelsfield Village Shop and Cafe is established as a non-profit making community enterprise, staffed by volunteers from the local community. It was opened by the Prince of Wales in December 2004, when he described the project as "a triumph of community spirit".
The community shop includes a cafe, general store and food outlet, post office, library kiosk, art gallery and IT training suite. The building is of traditional oak construction combined with sustainable technology, and aims to be environmentally friendly with photovoltaic roof shingles producing electricity, the excess from which is exported back to the national grid. The building also has a geothermal heating system, drawing energy from the ground under the village playing field.
The shop tries to cater for locals and visitors alike. We stock all the basics such as baked beans, cornflakes, sugar, etc.
We try to keep our prices as competitive as possible and with the cost of motoring so high it can make economic sense to "shop local".
We also stock luxury groceries for special occasions, and delicatessen items including olives and sun dried tomatoes.
The shop has a wide range of fresh items including fruit and vegetables, meat, and dairy items, including local cheeses.
We also pride ourselves on having a wide range of local produce and have won several awards for our range of local produce including the BBC food and farming awards, with a very large percentage of the stock coming from within 50 miles of the shop. Several of our suppliers are from surrounding villages.
