Discover the story of the Forest of Dean
Step into the past and experience a memorable family day out in the heart of the Forest of Dean. From fascinating local stories and hands-on museum displays to a much-loved Gruffalo woodland trail, a welcoming coffee shop and a gift shop filled with local treasures, there is plenty to discover.
The Dean Heritage Centre is an accredited museum and registered charity dedicated to preserving the Forest’s unique history, heritage and culture. Every visit, donation and purchase helps us care for our collection and keep these important stories alive for future generations.
Explore the Museum
Journey through thousands of years of Forest of Dean history across five fascinating galleries. Discover how people lived, worked and shaped the area, from prehistoric times through to the challenges faced by the local community during the Second World War.
With interactive exhibits, engaging displays, family-friendly activities and indoor trails, there are plenty of ways for visitors of all ages to get involved. Ask a member of our friendly team about the trails available during your visit.
Follow the Gruffalo Trail
Take a stroll through the woodland and join Mouse on an adventure inspired by Julia Donaldson’s much-loved story, The Gruffalo.
Follow the short trail beside the brook, discover beautifully carved characters and see how clever Mouse escapes each tricky situation. Set within the natural beauty of the Forest of Dean, it is a wonderful experience for families and young Gruffalo fans.
As a woodland site, the trail includes gravel paths, but it is suitable for buggies.
Relax in the Coffee Shop
After exploring, take time to relax in our welcoming coffee shop overlooking the picturesque mill pond.
Choose from a wide selection of breakfasts, lunches, light bites, cakes, snacks and drinks. Enjoy the cosy indoor seating, take in the scenery from the balcony or pick up something delicious to take away.
You are also welcome to visit the coffee shop without visiting the museum.
Find Something Special in the Gift Shop
Our gift shop is a destination in its own right, with a carefully selected range of gifts, toys and keepsakes inspired by the Forest of Dean, the museum and, of course, The Gruffalo.
We are proud to support talented local craftspeople and artists, including jewellers, printmakers, glass artists and woodworkers. Whether you are searching for a special present, a locally made treasure or a reminder of your day, there is always something new to discover.
Every pound spent in the gift shop helps us preserve and share the remarkable heritage of the Forest of Dean.
Plan Your Visit
Come and explore, play, relax and discover the stories that make the Forest of Dean so special. With free museum entry and something for every generation to enjoy, the Dean Heritage Centre is the perfect place for your next family day out.
