The Royal Forest Route is a 20-mile circular driving trail through the very best of the Forest of Dean – a place steeped in history, brimming with woodland charm, and dotted with unforgettable attractions. Whether you're looking for natural beauty, unique visitor experiences, or a relaxed drive through glorious countryside, this route offers the perfect way to explore the area.

Where to Start

There are two suggested starting points depending on your direction of travel:

East (from Gloucester): Begin at the Dean Heritage Centre, where you’ll get a rich introduction to the Forest’s industrial past and unique ecology.

West (from Chepstow or the Severn Bridge): Start at Clearwell Caves, a remarkable ancient iron ore mine with a story stretching back over 3,000 years.

What You’ll Discover Along the Way

The trail takes you past a range of highlights and hidden gems:

Soudley Ponds – a peaceful spot for a waterside stroll or picnic.

Speech House Hotel – a 17th-century hunting lodge and historic landmark.

Beechenhurst Sculpture Trail – woodland walks with artistic surprises.

Cannop Ponds – popular for picnics and bird watching.

Hopewell Colliery – go underground at a working Forest coal mine.

Perrygrove Railway - a unique steam railway, ideal for family friendly visits.

Coleford – a vibrant town with a rich industrial heritage.

Puzzlewood – a mystical maze of moss-covered paths and film-famous scenery.

Nagshead Nature Reserve – a haven for woodland birds and wildlife lovers.

Mallards Pike Lake – tranquil views, woodland trails, and Go Ape adventures.

You can also take detours to explore Symonds Yat, Newent, or Lydney Harbour, or simply pause along the route for local food and farm shops, picnic sites, or viewpoints like New Fancy View and the spectacular Golden Mile in autumn.

Tips for Travelling the Route

The full route takes just a couple of hours to drive, but you’ll want to allow extra time to explore.

The route is well signposted, with easy access to local visitor centres, parking, cafés, and toilets.

Dogs are welcome at many sites and walks, and there’s plenty to keep families entertained too.

Note. These maps and directions were created some time ago and some features and locations may have changed. In particular the Giant's Chair at Beechenhurst was removed in 2016.

We are the Museum of the Forest. Learn about the history of the Forest, visit our museum and gallery, explore the Gruffalo woodland trail and playground, visit a charcoal burner's camp, see chainsaw carving, our mill pond and pretty stream.

The Speech House Hotel

A former historic hunting lodge located in the centre of the Royal Forest of Dean. With 35 en-suite bedrooms, a cosy bar, pretty garden with heated dining dens, and two restaurants.

Beechenhurst Visitor Centre

Beechenhurst, managed by Forestry England, lies in the heart of the Forest of Dean, and is a great place to start your forest adventure. Trail, play area, picnic spots, Go Ape and cafe.
Step 4

Cannop Ponds

Picturesque ponds, home to lots of wildlife. Great picnic area and central for walks and cycle paths.

Hopewell Colliery

Mined since the 1800s, the colliery gives you a unique opportunity to learn about the ancient and fascinating tradition of freemining in the safe hands of an expert freeminer.

Unique railway with walks through beautiful woodland. Tickets last all day - enjoy as many train rides as you like! Indoor Village and exciting Treasure Hunt! Cafe is available.Picnics welcome.

Puzzlewood Forest

Clearwell Caves

Discover the wonder of under! The ancient mines at Clearwell Caves are a secret world hidden beneath the trees; they are an exciting underground experience for the whole family.

Nagshead Nature Reserve

Nagshead is an RSPB Nature Reserve, the largest in the Forest of Dean. It is an ideal spot for birdwatching and wildlife spotting with woodland walks, ponds and hides.

Mallards Pike
