Mother’s Day is coming up fast, and one of the best ways to show your mum how much you appreciate her is by treating her to a day out, giving her the chance to do something that she loves, as well as to spend quality time with you! If you’re looking for some ideas, we’ve put together a list of just some of the options for a Mother’s Day day out here in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley.

Discover the area's history

An area steeped in history, the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley is home to a number of historic ruins, including Chepstow Castle, Grosmont Castle, Raglan Castle, Skenfrith Castle, Usk Castle, and Tintern Abbey. If your mum loves history, there’s no better way to spend Mother’s Day than heading back in time within the walls of these stunning ruins.

Go shopping

Looking to combine your Mother’s Day day out with some retail therapy? The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley is perfect for a shopping trip, with a variety of independent retailers, craft centres, markets, and local food and drink producers nestled throughout the area, as well as high streets full of shops!

Travel on a steam train

Enjoy a relaxing journey through 9 miles of beautiful medieval forest, all from the comfort of a steam train with Dean Forest Railways! You can also enjoy a delicious cream tea, yummy cakes, sweet treats and of course a ride on the miniature locomotives at Perrygrove Railway

Explore Puzzlewood

With strange rock formations, secret caves, and ancient trees, Puzzlewood is the perfect place to explore if you and your mum like getting out into nature. Plus, you’ll get bonus points if your mum is a fan of Star Wars, Doctor Who, or Merlin (among others), as these were all filmed in Puzzlewood! Treat Mum to a lovely walk through the magical woodland at Puzzlewood and a heart keepsake that you can make and take home. Create one large heart as a family or choose small individual ones - Free craft activity included in all tickets for Sunday 19th March.

For an extra special treat, add a delicious cupcake with tea or coffee.

Go for Sunday lunch

Let someone else do the cooking and the washing-up, and treat yourself and your mum to a delicious Sunday lunch with The Hope and Anchor’s special Mother’s Day menu! Peadalabikeway Cafe are also serving a Mothers Day roast this Sunday with all the trimmings. They'll be both roast beef and a vegan nut roast alternative.

See the snowdrops

Walk with butterflies at Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo

With a wide range of butterflies from around the world, Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo gives you the opportunity to get a close-up look at the fascinating lives of butterflies. Perfect for the mums with an interest in nature and the environment!
