About Backstage in the Gage - Hod Boys

Young boys were employed in coal mines to pull a hod (wooden box) filled with coal using a leather harness over their shoulders and pulling on their hands and knees as the height of the coal seam was usually less than three feet. Find out more about this gruelling work from local historian John Belcher.

Come to the Collections room to get a glimpse behind the scenes, see objects that are not on display and chat with our staff and dedicated volunteers. A great opportunity to get close to history and discover some of the many wonderful stories in our collection.
