Discover Hereford
Historic heart, cultural soul, and home of the world-famous Mappa Mundi
Located on the banks of the River Wye, Hereford is a vibrant cathedral city that combines rich history with a lively modern spirit. Dating back to Saxon times, this old walled city is known for its beautiful architecture, strong agricultural heritage, and flourishing arts and cultural scene.
Today, Hereford remains an important hub for local produce and livestock, with deep roots in cider-making, farming, and rural traditions - but it also proudly embraces its role as a centre for events, shopping, and entertainment in the region.
Hereford Cathedral: A Treasure Trove of History
A visit to Hereford wouldn’t be complete without stepping inside the magnificent Hereford Cathedral. This stunning building showcases a blend of architectural styles from Norman to modern times and remains the spiritual and cultural heart of the city.
Inside, you'll find two world-renowned treasures:
- The Mappa Mundi: Dating from around 1300, this extraordinary medieval map of the world is the largest and most famous of its kind in existence, offering a fascinating glimpse into medieval understanding of the world.
- The Chained Library: Home to over 1,500 rare books and manuscripts, the Chained Library is the largest surviving library of its type in the world, where books were once secured by chains to prevent theft.
The cathedral also hosts a great range of exhibitions, concerts and recitals throughout the year, and once every three years it becomes a key venue for the prestigious Three Choirs Festival - the world’s longest-running classical music festival, dating back over 300 years.
