1. Sustainable Tourism No Poverty

No Poverty: keep it local, and everyone does better

Round here, everyone knows everyone, so the money you spend tends to stay close to home. Every local hire, local supplier and local maker keeps the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley working for the people who live here.

How local businesses keep jobs, money and opportunity close to home.

How keeping it local works in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley

When a pub buys its produce from a farm down the road, the farmer spends locally too. When a holiday let books a local guide, musician or craft workshop for its guests, the visitor gets something they couldn't find anywhere else, and the money lands with someone who lives here.

None of this is charity, it's how a rural economy holds together.  It's a large part of why people choose to visit because a place that looks after its own feels different. Guests notice, even when they couldn't tell you why.

What is UN Sustainable Development Goal 1, No Poverty?

Ending poverty sounds like a job for governments. Here, it starts with who you hire and where you shop. The United Nations calls it Sustainable Development Goal 1: No Poverty - one of six goals Visit Dean Wye partners have chosen to champion.

First steps for a tourism business

  • Hire locally at every level, and invest in training so people can grow with you
  • Buy food, drink and supplies from local producers, and pay a fair price
  • Point guests to independent shops, local pubs, cafés and attractions
  • Offer an apprenticeship, placement or mentoring to a local student
  • Donate what you no longer use, local charities will give it a new life

Frequently asked questions

Does hiring locally count if the job is seasonal?

Yes. A first season on the river or a summer behind the bar is often someone's first job, and the Decent Work page covers how to make it a good one.

We can't source everything locally. Where do we start?

Start with one line: the bread, the beer, the eggs, the cleaning contract. One local supplier is a step. The directory lists local producers and farm shops to begin with.
