In need of a pause from the Christmas chaos? Here's our guide to finding your freedom outdoors during the holiday.  Choose a Christmas, Boxing Day or New Year's Day stroll from one of our favourite winter walks across the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. Pack a hat, gloves, scarf and flask and set off.

The Offa's Dyke Path runs from the River Severn in the south of Gloucestershire along the River Wye north to Monmouth in Wales, and then travels north west towards Abergavenny and the Brecon Beacons. There are many small sections that can be completed in a few hours, see of which take in stunning views over Tintern.

Cannop Ponds

Owned and managed by Forestry England, Cannop Ponds are captivating on a winters day when mist rises off the water.  The circular routes around the water give walkers sublime views of wildlife and are perfect for an after-dinner stroll.

New Fancy Lookout Point

New Fancy is named after the now decommissioned New Fancy coal mine, and its spoil heap provides the most spectacular elevated 360-degree view over the forest cannopy. It’s an excellent base for longer walks to Mallard's Pike Lake or Speech House woods.

Known as a leaf-peeping hotspot however we think Cyril Heart Arboretum is awe inspiring even in the height of winter. Most magical at dusk as the light dips in between the branches casting long shadows in winter. Well-maintained footpaths make it a great choice for those with young children or mobility issues.

Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail

Always a firm favourite in the Forest of Dean, the scuplture trail works so well as its draws you through the forest on a voyage of discovery. A real feel-good walk as it combines both nature and art two things known to lift the spirits after too much screen time.
