Spring in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley

A season of renewal, colour and adventure

As the days grow longer and the sun starts to shine a little brighter, the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley begins to stir with fresh energy. Spring is a magical time to explore our vast ancient woodlands, wild river valleys, and charming villages as nature reawakens and carpets of wildflowers and bluebells emerge. From bluebell walks and lamb-spotting to riverside picnics and food festivals, spring is a season for new experiences and great days out.

Woodland Walks and Flower-Filled Trails

Nothing says spring like a stroll through the forest under the bright green canopy of newly budded leaves. Our woodlands are alive with wood anemones, primroses, celandines and violets in early spring, followed by wild garlic and stunning carpets of bluebells in late April and May. The Golden Triangle of Daffodils is a sight to behold, and nature lovers can explore a network of beautiful walking trails that take in some of the UK’s finest wildflower displays.

Seasonal Wildlife and Spring Watch

Look out for new life in the forest – baby deer, wild boar piglets (known as humbugs), and birds busy building nests. Early mornings reward walkers with the uplifting chorus of birdsong, and if you’re lucky, a glimpse of a shy otter or kingfisher along the riverbanks. Nature-lovers will love the opportunity to witness this rebirth of the season up close.
