About The Trail
Step into the stories that shape the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley with our Myths & Legends Trail - a journey through strange sightings, ghostly whispers, ancient superstitions and folklore that refuses to fade.
From haunted halls and mysterious beasts, to witchcraft trials, fairy tales and legendary heroes, the Dean Wye is steeped in eerie history and captivating stories passed down through generations. This self-guided trail brings together over 20 curious locations across the region, each with its own tale to tell.
Visit the Devil’s Pulpit overlooking Tintern Abbey, said to be the spot where the Devil himself tried to lure monks from their sacred vows. Venture into King Arthur’s Cave, rumoured to hold the bones of giants, or explore the legend of the Mordiford Dragon in Herefordshire. Then there’s the infamous question still whispered in Ruardean - “Who killed the bears?”
You'll encounter tales of the last witch of Gloucestershire, cursed Roman rings, phantom figures at Swan Pool, mischievous Pwcas, and even a ‘Moose-Pig’ said to roam the woods.
Whether you’re fascinated by folklore or just fancy adding a little mystery to your next walk, this trail invites you to explore the hidden stories woven into the landscape of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley.
