About Stone Carving Festival

Experience heritage craftsmanship in action at Gloucester Cathedral's inaugural Stone Carving Festival! This extraordinary three-day celebration brings together master stonemasons and carvers of all levels to create beautiful works of art right before your eyes on the stunning Cathedral Green.

Inspired by the poignant theme of Peace and Remembrance in this 80th anniversary year of VE Day, skilled craftspeople will chisel, carve and shape stones in real time, providing a rare opportunity to witness centuries-old techniques being practiced by today's master artisans.

What You'll Experience Watch live carving demonstrations from Gloucester Cathedral's own expert masons alongside visiting stonemasons from around the country. This is living history as these talented craftspeople create unique pieces reflecting the Peace and Remembrance theme throughout the weekend.

Perfect for All Ages Enjoy hands-on activities suitable for the whole family, giving everyone a chance to try their hand at this ancient craft. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, there's something for everyone to discover about this fascinating skill.

Food and Refreshments The Cathedral Green will come alive with delicious offerings from Box Kitchen, Smokingly Good BBQ and Mumma's Meals - perfect for refuelling between watching the amazing demonstrations and trying your own carving techniques.

A Chance to Own Living History Following the festival, the stones carved during the event - along with 12 historic stones that once formed part of the Cathedral itself - will be auctioned online. This is an incredibly rare opportunity to own a unique piece of living history while supporting vital conservation work.
