About Us
This three-hour walk examines the geological features around Bixslade and is led by Dave Green, a local geologist.
The walk examines the underlying geology, mining, quarrying and industrial heritage of this great escarpment.
The walk is 3km long with one relatively easy climb and no stiles. A reasonable level of fitness will be needed to complete the walk.
Highlights: Bixslade is the best place in the Forest to illustrate the various extractive industries upon which its economy used to be based; there are lots of coal mines, one active; two active stone quarries (which supply the stone cutting works); and a very unusual occurrence of iron ore. This area lies near the centre of the coal basin, where the easily eroded youngest rocks are underlain by the Pennant Sandstone, forming a great escarpment, into which Bixslade is cut.
