About Us
This ancient skill (which dates back as far as the vikings) was an every day technique through to medieval times and it will give you a bowl that is both functional and beautiful.
You’ll start the day learning about native British timber and how to select the best type for bowl turning. Then you will start working on your piece of timber, starting by using a froe to split the wood and marking out your bowl ‘blank’. With guidance from Michelle, you will learn how to safely use an axe to rough out your blank.
The next step is learning how to attach a mandrel and mount your blank to the lathe correctly. You’ll then use a variety of different turning tools to create your bowl. Finish your bowl by trimming it off, drying and oiling it.
This course is suitable for all abilities, from beginners up. It is a physically demanding day, so a reasonable level of fitness and stamina is required.
