About Us
In this one-day course you will weave an ash splint basket with a square bottom and round top. The techniques used today have their roots in both traditional basket making of North America and European green woodworking.
Each ash splint used to weave the basket starts as a section of the tree’s growth ring. Michelle pounds them by hand, splits and trims them, before finishing them ready for weaving. Michelle will bring these finished splints with her, for you to weave.
Throughout the day you will get to know the properties of ash: it’s durability, flexibility strengths and weaknesses. You’ll learn knife techniques to prepare ash for weaving, you’ll do a basic weave and understand the importance of tension. Learning these skills will give you the foundation to adapt future baskets to your own design and it will give you a new appreciation of the mighty ash!
