About Us

 

Looking for a romantic and peaceful getaway? You may just have found it!   At Dean Cottages footpaths lead straight from your door and on for miles into the forest! We are surrounded by wildlife and have our own private hide in the garden. In summer there are plenty of sunny spots to sit out and admire the amazing views across the valley to the woods. In winter you can snuggle up on the sofa in front of a roaring log fire instead. It is a true haven of peace and tranquility in which to unwind and recharge your batteries.

Each of our cottages sleeps 2, with the possiblilty of renting a combination of two or three sleeping a maximum of 6 for friends and family to stay together in the same location.

Wren Cottage is a pretty stone cottage. To the downstairs there is a lounge with wood burner set in it's original inglenook stone fireplace and comfy leather sofa. From the lounge a couple of stone steps lead up to the well-equipped kitchen with stable door. Up a narrow winding staircase you will find a romantic double bedroom with ensuite shower room. French doors open from the lounge to a sunny bench seat and the footpath, which takes you into the Forest. Across the footpath there is a private screened and gated patio with fantastic views over fields and woodland. The 1/3 acre enclosed wildlife garden with it's bird hide and pond is open to guests and is great for a picnic, to admire the views and to play with your dog.

Robin Cottage is a luxury stone cottage with stunning woodland views and perfect for a romantic couple. Enter through a stable door to the lounge with wood burner set in its original inglenook stone fireplace and comfy Italian leather sofa. The well-equipped sunny kitchen has French doors from which you can admire the scenery. Up a winding staircase you will find a romantic double bedroom with king size bed. Across the landing is the stylish bathroom, with bath and shower over. Outside, across the footpath, there is a private patio with fantastic views over fields and woodland. The 1/3 acre enclosed wildlife garden with its bird hide and pond is open to guests and is great for a picnic or to admire the scenery with glass in hand!

Little Owl, located on the edge of a small common a modern, is a bright and airy studio apartment. The open plan accomadation is all on one level. The kitchen is spacious, modern and fully equipped with double oven, fridge, hob, microwave and Nespesso Coffee machine. The lounge has a 40 inch flat screen smart TV, comfy sofa and leather easy chair. The bedroom area includes a comfortable double bed and has good storage. The separate recently refururbished shower room is large and bright. Outside you can admire the surroundings from a little patio overlooking a small common and nearby Flaxley Woods. There is free parking within 10 meters and access is over a level gravelled pathway. Please note the enclosed wildlife garden and bird hide is accessed via a farily steep hill 30-40 meters away and walks nearby are hilly.

Facilities

Accessibility

  • Elderly and less mobile - Little Owl is suitable for those who are less mobile, although is not wheelchair accessible. (please refer to the accessibility section for more details). Robin and Wren Cottages are NOT recommended for those with less mobile, as the access is via a steep slope and there are stairs and steps indoors. The shared wildlife garden is located down this steep slope and so would not be accessible to some from Little Owl. However there is a patio at the door of the studio and a large expanse of reasonably level grassland on the doorstep.

  • Freezer - Wren Cottage has a fridge freezer. Little Owl Studio and Robin Cottage have a freezer compartment within the fridge with a box style freezer shared between with one other cottage. It is located in a separate building.

COVID-19 Response

  • 24-hour minimum vacancy between guests - We are currently operating a 72 hour quarantine period between bookings until January 2021.

  • Contactless check-in - Check-in via a key safe. You will receive a code before check in via our welcome App. The safe and key are sanitised at each changeover.

  • Contactless payment possible - Payment is taken in advance via Paypal, transfer or cheque. When purchasing extra logs cash or a cheque can be left in our letter box or payment can be made by bank transfer.
  • COVID-19 measures in place - We have completed a full risk assessment which is reviewed regularly. This is available upon request and we are more than happy to answer any questions.
  • COVID-19 refund and cancellation policy in place - We offer full refunds if you are prevented from travelling owing to either you or ourselves being subject to a lockdown preventing travel. This does include those who are subject to Tier 3 guidance which advises against travelling out of your own area.

Road Directions

From Gloucester follow A4136 as you approach Mitcheldean turn left before the LAMB INN and the roundabout into Abenhall Road. Go past Dean Magna School on your right. At a sharp rh bend with chevrons,TURN LEFT into Church Lane. Go past Abenhall Church and uphill following the road that. At the Shapridge Farm, bear right onto a rough track. Little Owl will be immediately on your right and the parking for all three cottages is just in front of you on the right. The nearest bus stop is in Mitcheldean (3 miles) and the nearest railway station is Gloucester (12 miles).
